Skiing in South America
Most natives of the Northern Hemisphere are intrigued
by the novelty of skiing during a season, which lasts
from late June to mid-October. South America has the
best skiing in the world for four months of the year,
a fact substantiated by the annual arrival of the world's
top skiers and ski teams
at several of the larger resorts.
In addition, South American resorts are remarkably
uncrowded. Outside the last two weeks of July when the
Argentines are on holiday, skiers can travel freely
to any of the resorts without advanced planning or reservations.
The
development boom of the last half of the 1980s resulted
in slope and hotel capacities that far exceed the number
of domestic skiers, and the quality of the facilities
is comparable to the top resorts of Europe and North
America.
Skiing could also be an incidental reason to travel
in this scenic and untrampled part of the world. The
people are extraordinarily gracious, and the countryside
is beautiful and dramatic. Travel within the region
is accomplished easily and economically. Outstanding
food and wine is served to
fit all tastes and budgets. The region can be comfortably
explored either in first class style or with a student's
budget.
Most importantly, Chile and Argentina are safe for travel.
Finally, there's Santiago, Downtown area is easily
explored by foot, and the modern suburbs are quickly
and cheaply reached with an immaculate subway train.
Most importantly, Santiago is safer than most cities
in North America
and Europe. The city compares to Salt Lake City, Utah,
as a modern metropolis surrounded by snow-capped mountains
with the country's best skiing a short drive away.
Don't just read about it; get on a plane and go
skiing this summer.
