General information
PORTILLO has been welcoming guests from all
over the world for 50 years.
PORTILLO is a high mountain destination ski area.
Amid beautiful surroundings, you'll find only one
hotel, 500 guests, 450 employees and a reputation
for fun.
Guests enjoy incredible skiing and hotel services
as though you are at a private club resort. You will
feel the legend of PORTILLO when you ski on those
same runs where Jean Claude Killy won his first
gold medal, where the world speed records have been
broken, and where the U.S. Ski Team trains. You
will relax, laugh and get healthy in the hotel's
massage room, sauna, heated outdoor pool, weight
room, gymnasium, restaurants, bar and disco. The
ski area itself has not changed a great deal over
the years. They have snowmaking and grooming, there
are twelve lifts, including five chairlifts; but
the unique Va et Vient lifts designed by Jean Pomagalski
in the 60's, to permit access to the high avalanche
chutes across the Roca Jack and the Condor slopes,
are still there, challenging experts and offering
access to some great open-slope powder skiing and
a myriad of steep chutes. The people of Portillo,
guests as well as personnel - all are wonderful
people coming together in a wonderful world of skiing.

Mountain rating
Beginners Portillo is an excellent place to
learn how to ski or snowboard. Beginners will
find themselves turning their skis confidently
in no time. El Puma, El Corralito, and La Princesa
are beginner's runs.
Intermediate / Advanced
The Juncalillo run is Portillo's longest and the
favorite practice run slope of the U.S. and Austrian
Ski Teams. Jean-Claude Killy won a gold medal
on our Plateau Run, probably the most popular
run at the resort. David's Run, Descenso, Los
Zorros, El Estadio all offer variety and excitement.
Expert
Portillo's expert runs are world-renowned. The
Roca Jack and Condor runs, so steep they require
a special, one-of-its-kind lift; the Upper Plateau,
Garganta; and the famous Kilometro Lanzado, home
to three speed skiing trial records. The 200km
speed barrier was broken for the first time here
on Portillo's Kilometro Lanzado.
POWDER SKIING AND UNPACKED RUNS
Portillo is renowned for its powder skiing, and
with so few guests there's no worry that fresh
powder will be tracked out by the afternoon; in
fact, the powder can last for several days. The
resort does not groom some of our guests' favorite
advanced runs such as Garganta, Condor and Roca
Jack. Our guests like these vertical runs as just
nature leaves them.Off-Piste TerrainUsing either
the Roca Jack or Condor lifts, skiers and snowboarders
can traverse -- weather and avalanche risks permitting
-- to unbelievable off-piste terrain, such as
the steep, powdery Primavera Run.

Activities
Portillo offers all kinds of entertainment,
activities and facilities to keep guests entertained
after a day on the snowslopes. The living room is
the place to hang out, read, play chess or backgammon,
or simply enjoy relaxing by the fireplace. Couches
are comfy spots for reading a book, and we have
a library stocked with good literature (as well
as trashy novels). The bar features live music and
bands every night and the sun deck is a social center.
The cyber café available to check e-mails
and our disco stays open until the last guest leaves.
Sports and fitness facilities are surprisingly extensive!
There is a large, wooden floor gymnasium for soccer,
basketball and volleyball tournaments. The weight
room has treadmills, bicycles, stair climbers, free
weights and Universal equipment. They also offer
aerobics and yoga six days a week and stretching
classes. |
